Papermaking: Pulp, Plants & Paper
Learn to form handmade paper using recycled pulp and locally gathered plant fibres.
Service Description
Discover the tactile process of turning loose pulp and fibres into your own handmade paper. In this guided workshop, participants will learn the basic steps of Western-style papermaking, from preparing the vat and pulling a sheet with a mould and deckle to couching, pressing, and drying the finished paper. We will begin with recycled paper pulp, then experiment with blending in prepared plant fibres gathered locally. By changing the balance of paper pulp and plant fibre, you will see how the materials affect the colour, texture, thickness, and surface of each sheet. Papermaking is an active, hands-on process, and no two sheets behave in exactly the same way. You will have time to experiment with different fibre blends and develop a small collection of papers with varied textures, deckled edges, and individual character. No previous papermaking or art experience is required. All materials and equipment are provided. Because handmade paper needs time to dry, finished sheets will remain at the studio overnight and can be collected afterward.
